Key Tips for Travellers

Know your location — Be ready to describe where you are clearly (street names, landmarks, or GPS coordinates if possible). Coverage can be limited in remote areas.
Save numbers — Store 111 and 0800 611 116 in your phone before you travel.
Mobile phones — 111 works even without credit or a local SIM. In very remote areas, consider hiring a personal locator beacon (PLB).
Ambulance costs — Visitors may be charged for ambulance transport. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.
ACC cover — Accidental injuries (including many outdoor activities) are often covered by New Zealand’s Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC), but illness is not.
Stay informed — Check Civil Defence alerts and weather warnings, especially in alpine, coastal or rural areas.
Personal safety — Avoid walking alone late at night, keep valuables secure, and tell someone your travel plans.
